The rapid expansion of digital technologies into everyday life has brought about dramatic changes in the way people live. As has always been the case, innovation creates remarkable opportunities while at the same time introducing entirely new challenges. Numerous scientific studies have confirmed what many of us have long suspected – smartphones and tablets have had the greatest impact on the most vulnerable among us: children.
Even when they are not being used, the mere presence of mobile phones on a desk reduces cognitive capacity, as an important part of our attention remains occupied by the possibility of incoming notifications. Short-form, low-value video content is designed to capture attention and discourage deeper thinking and sustained reading, both of which are essential for academic success. There is a certain irony in the fact that children are constantly connected online, yet spend less and less time truly connecting with one another.
Few things are as distressing as seeing children who are irritable, sleep-deprived, and emotionally disengaged, because childhood is naturally a time for joy, play, and enthusiasm.
In order to protect our students from this modern-day challenge, we have adopted a policy that completely prohibits the use of mobile phones and other personal digital devices by both students and staff throughout the school day.
The mind should remain clear, focused, and open to a world of new knowledge.
