The best possible outcome is when parents make the right choice from the very beginning and enroll their child in a school where they will feel happy, supported, and successful throughout their education.
Choosing a school is often based on the information available to us—information that may be incomplete or inaccurate. We rely on other people’s opinions, which are not necessarily our own and can often be highly subjective. Sometimes we make our decision after only one or two brief visits, without even meeting the primary school teachers or gaining a genuine understanding of the quality of education the school provides. We choose, and we hope for the best.
So, how can we tell whether the school our child attends is truly the right one? How and when should we evaluate whether changing schools might be the better option?
If you feel that your child is not safe—either physically or emotionally—if you worry every time they leave for school that they may be hurt or harmed by someone else, that alone is a valid reason to stop and reassess. Children’s safety at school depends on the organization, responsibility, and commitment of every member of the school community.
If you believe the quality of teaching is not at a high standard, that students are expected to achieve more while being given less support, that outdated teaching methods are still being used, that lessons simply rush through the curriculum to meet formal requirements, or that teaching is not adapted to children’s individual needs, it may be time to ask important questions. Every child has unique talents, strengths, and potential, and a good school recognizes and nurtures them.
If your child is not receiving the guidance and encouragement they need for healthy personal development and overall growth, and if you do not see clear progress—if they are not more confident, more knowledgeable, more motivated, and happier than they were a year ago—it may be the right time to seriously consider changing schools.
